Artist Website or Trade Platform? How Interior Designers Should Choose Where to Source Art

By Leah Justyce  ·  28 September 2026

The question behind the question

"Where do I find an artist?" usually has a more specific question hiding inside it: should this project be built around one artist's voice, or does it need a wider net? That decision matters more than which website you start searching on, because it determines what kind of collection you end up with.

When one artist is the right call

A single-artist relationship is the stronger choice when a project needs one consistent visual voice -- a boutique hotel, a residential collection, a design studio's signature look across multiple projects. Working with one artist directly also means the relationship compounds: the second project moves faster than the first because the artist already understands your palette instincts and how you like to brief.

When a trade platform is the right call

A platform with a dedicated brief desk, like Solene Haus, is the better fit when a project genuinely needs range -- a mixed-use development with different moods per building, a hospitality group with distinct properties, or simply more volume than one artist's realistic capacity. It is also useful when you do not yet know which single artist is right and want a brief matched against several.

The brief matters more than the source

Whichever route you take, the brief is doing the real work: wall dimensions, palette references from the actual space, the mood you are designing toward, and your installation deadline. A vague brief produces a mismatched result no matter how well-sourced the artist is. A specific brief, given to the right artist, is what actually produces a piece that belongs in the room.
