Why most artists cannot deliver at commercial scale
There is no shortage of talented Australian artists. But when an interior designer or procurement team needs large-format original artwork for a hotel, corporate headquarters, or commercial fitout, the pool shrinks dramatically. Creating work at scale - consistently, to a brief, on a deadline - is a different discipline to making gallery work on your own timeline.
Most artists are not set up for it. The ones who are have usually come from a professional practice background rather than a purely gallery-based one.
What to look for in a commercial-scale fine artist
A professional practice, not just a portfolio
Look for artists with a sustained professional history - not just a strong Instagram presence. An artist with 20-plus years of working practice, commissions across multiple industries, and experience delivering to client briefs is a fundamentally different proposition to an emerging artist whose work you admire.
Experience working to a brief
Gallery artists create what they want to create. Commercial artists create what the space needs. Ask directly: have they worked from a colour palette provided by a designer? Have they produced work to specified dimensions for a fitout? Have they delivered multiple pieces as a cohesive collection?
Capacity and turnaround
A single large artwork is one thing. Twenty, fifty, or a hundred works for a hotel rollout is another. Ask about realistic output - not the best-case scenario, but what they can reliably sustain without compromising quality.
