The math of sourcing existing work at scale
Finding one existing abstract painting that fits a specific wall, palette and mood is already a narrow search. Finding thirty or a hundred that all fit, from a small enough number of artists that the collection reads as coherent, on a fixed installation deadline, is not really possible through sourcing alone. The available inventory simply was not made with your project's brief in mind.
What commissioning solves that sourcing cannot
A commission removes the constraint entirely. The palette is drawn from your actual project, not matched after the fact from what happens to exist. The number of works is exactly what the project requires, not however many suitable pieces could be found. And the mood is agreed with the artist directly before production, rather than assessed against a shortlist of whatever was already painted.
Why this matters even more at volume
A single piece can sometimes be sourced successfully if you get lucky. A large body of work almost never can, because the probability of finding dozens of existing pieces that all satisfy the same brief compounds against you with every additional piece required. Commissioning does not have this problem -- production scales to the brief instead of the brief being constrained by what already exists.
What this looks like for a hotel or development project
A commissioned body of work for a hotel or development is built to one consistent palette, in the quantity the project actually needs, with staged delivery aligned to the build schedule and labelling by room where required. None of that is achievable through sourcing existing stock from multiple artists or galleries -- it requires one production process built specifically for the brief.
