How Long Does a Custom Art Commission Take for an Interior Design Project?

By Leah Justyce  ·  10 June 2026

The honest answer to "how long will it take?"

The most common question interior designers ask before commissioning artwork is about timeline. And the honest answer is: it depends on medium, scale, and volume. But there are reliable benchmarks you can plan around.

Acrylic commissions: fastest turnaround

Acrylic paint dries quickly, which makes it the best medium for projects with tight deadlines or large volume requirements. For a single large-scale acrylic work I can typically deliver within two to four weeks including framing. For a full commercial fit-out requiring 20, 30, or more individual works, acrylics make it possible to deliver at a sustainable pace within eight weeks, with larger volumes scheduled across a longer timeline.

This is why I recommend acrylics for hotel and motel fit-outs, serviced apartment complexes, and any commercial project requiring multiple pieces on a fixed timeline.

Oil commissions: allow more time

Oil paint is slower to dry, and rushing the drying process damages the work. A single oil commission typically needs six to ten weeks depending on the complexity and number of layers. For multiple oil works, timelines extend accordingly.

If you want the depth and luminosity that only oils deliver but have a firm project deadline, come to me early. The work can be created in parallel with other parts of your build if we plan ahead.

The part most designers do not account for: framing

All of my commissions are professionally framed and ready to hang. Framing adds one to two weeks to the timeline depending on the frame profile and whether it is custom or selected from existing profiles. I manage this process so you do not have to coordinate a separate framer.

My recommendation for every project

Build artwork into your project schedule at the brief stage, not the styling stage. Art is one of the last things designers think about and one of the first things that defines whether a space feels finished. Commission early, and the timeline pressure disappears entirely.
