Art procurement for hotels is its own discipline
A hotel fitout is not a residential commission at scale. The pressures are different - hard installation deadlines, multiple stakeholders, brand alignment across dozens or hundreds of rooms, and a client who often has no experience buying original art. Getting the art procurement right requires a clear process from the start.
Step 1: Lock in the art brief before anything else
The art brief should be developed at the same time as the interior colour palette, not after. Art that is sourced to match a finished interior always looks like an afterthought. Art that is commissioned alongside the interior feels like it belongs.
Your brief needs: room-by-room artwork sizes, the overall colour story, the mood and market positioning of the hotel, your installation deadline, and the total number of works required.
Step 2: Choose medium based on timeline
For hotel fitouts with fixed completion dates, acrylics are almost always the right choice. They dry fast, which means the artist can work at volume without compromising quality. For signature statement pieces in lobbies or restaurants where timeline allows, oils deliver a depth and richness that acrylics cannot match.
Be honest with your artist about the deadline from day one. A good artist will tell you what is achievable. I can produce around 30 original acrylic works in eight weeks - all framed and ready to hang.
Step 3: Approve samples before full production
Never commission a full hotel volume without approving sample works first. A professional artist will expect this. Samples let you and your client confirm palette, scale, and style before full production begins - eliminating the risk of costly revisions on a completed collection.
Step 4: Plan delivery around your install schedule
Artwork should arrive ready to hang, labelled by room if a room plan has been provided. For staged fitouts where floors or wings open at different times, staged delivery is worth negotiating from the start. Do not let art procurement become the thing that holds up installation.
